Third Quarter, 2009
Fall is now upon us! We hope you enjoyed the summer season. As we approach another year-end, it is important to reflect on our experiences over the past year as well as look toward our future prospects. This can be said for our personal and working lives as well as for our investing lives. We have all weathered the ups and downs of the past two years and it has been a trying time, although the period has provided us with many lessons. Through these periods of volatility, we have all become more aware of our investing comfort level. It is through these experiences that we truly start to understand our own risk tolerance. Dan Richards, President of Strategic Imperatives, explains the relationship between emotional investing and investment returns in his article, Know your stomach or get off the ride.
A variety of emotions are experienced when one is exposed to market volatility. Clients know that we design portfolios to minimize volatility. In many cases, we include lower equity weightings than the client might think appropriate. Our article, Minimizing the effects of emotions to guarantee investment success, describes one of the rationales for this approach. This article will be the first part of a series on behavioral finance, which will be covered in future newsletters.
We all try to focus on making the soundest investments in the stock market, but this can also be said for investments in existing assets, such as our homes. We want to make the right investments to ensure that we receive an appropriate return on our chosen investment. As environmental concerns are at the forefront of our societal consciousness, the home ‘energy audit’ is gaining attention as a worthwhile investment. Ruth Blair of Prudential Sadie Moranis Realty describes the benefits of investing in an energy audit in her article, An Audit that Pays.
In closing, we hope this edition of our newsletter allows you to reflect on your investing experience and prepare you for future investment prospects.
If you have any questions or would like to arrange a meeting time to discuss your portfolio, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time.
Best regards,
